Senior Management Associate, Spearhead Training, UAE
Douglas is a Canadian national, who began his management career with the Toronto Board of Education in 1983. Over the past 30 years, his work experience at a senior level, has included Training, Management, Human Resources, Vocational Instructor, English Language Programmes, and Quality Management.
Douglas is a Master’s Level Instructor in training courses, which include Leadership, Human Resource, Business Etiquette, Sales, Customer Service and Business Communication. He also holds multiple accreditations for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001.
Having worked in Sales and Accounts positions from 1983 to 1991, Douglas moved into Human Resources in the Canadian automotive industry, with responsibility for over 600 employees. In this role he was able to utilise his training skills, as well as being responsible for hiring all new staff, and ensuring every new employee went through a comprehensive orientation and training programme. In addition to initial training, he was responsible for staff health and safety training, and quality training.
After working in the automotive industry for 12 years, Douglas was offered the opportunity to be part of the start-up of a new logistics company in the position of Human Resources Manager. He was part of the senior management team in charge of structuring and building the company, from the ground up.
The innovative strategy of the new company was to build an organization around a core of talented managers chosen for their innovation, drive, and key business competencies. Within six months, the senior management team had grown the business from a core base of seven drivers, up to over one hundred. At the same time, Douglas was able to organize the new company’s ISO 9001 quality certification. The success of the strategies resulted in a fast growing company, with over 225 employees within a three-year timeframe.
In 2008, with a desire to learn about other markets and cultures, and an opportunity to get back into training / teaching, Douglas was recruited to an academic position at Abu Dhabi University, UAE.
After a short time as a key Language Instructor (TEFL certified – Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Douglas was promoted to the Vocational Department of the university. In this role, he was able to apply his extensive knowledge in Human Resources, and taught BTEC (Business and Technical Education Council) courses to Emirati Nationals.
In 2011, realising that his second passion was in the quality field, Douglas accepted a position with an Abu Dhabi government institute as Quality Manager. Within 12 months, the company was ISO 9001 approved and implemented ISO 14001 (Environmental) and OHSAS 18001(Health and Safety) systems.
In 2012, Douglas completed his CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).
In 2013, he joined Spearhead Training as a Senior Management Associate.
His commitment, enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the business world, combined with his valuable real life experience of difficult management situations, brings added value to his informative and stimulating delivery in the training room.
