Sue Patterson

RM, CELTA
Senior Management Associate, Spearhead Training, U.A.E.

Sue is a U.K. national, with over 12 years extensive experience within healthcare provision and education. During this time, she has excelled at combining her sound medical knowledge with numerous, diverse educational roles, both within the U.K. and here in the U.A.E.

Sue’s career began in pharmacy, where she obtained a diploma in Pharmaceutical Science whilst working for Unichem, a major pharmaceutical chain. Responsible for patient education regarding health and treatment, Sue worked closely with healthcare professionals. She took this to another level when, in 1993, she was accepted to train in midwifery at the highly respected Guy’s & St Thomas’ Teaching Hospital in London.

Having gained a DipHE Midwifery Studies in 1996, she worked in St Thomas’ Hospital and two other leading university teaching hospitals in the U.K. for 9 years. Throughout this period, her roles included provision of education within the field, notably, having been selected to work on the hospital panel, formulating and implementing procedures and policies regarding blood-borne viruses. Sue led the ongoing programme to educate 250 staff members within the United Healthcare Trust in Bristol, in a number of key health issues.

In 2000, promotion to Ward Manager in St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol, presented a huge opportunity to: provide ongoing staff education programmes within the multidisciplinary team, run interactive workshops, staff appraisals and conduct counselling programmes. Sue acquired her Education For Practice Certificate (ENB997) whilst in post, which allowed her to undertake a more senior role within clinical education.

Sue moved to the U.A.E. in 2005 due to her husband’s work, and this gave her the opportunity to work in a truly varied culture in Abu Dhabi. She undertook the role of practising midwife at the Corniche Hospital, thriving on the diversity of the population. She identified a significant need for improved communication amongst staff and patients, so in 2008, she undertook the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) at the British Council, Abu Dhabi. Following successful completion of this course, she was offered a teaching post at the British Council, Abu Dhabi, where she successfully ran English teaching courses for all levels of English language.

This consolidated many training techniques for Sue, who feels passionately about the need for continuing education and professional / personal development.

She joined Spearhead Training in 2008 as a Senior Management Associate.
