Senior Management Associate, Spearhead Training, UAE
Alison Bowser is a British national, who moved to Abu Dhabi from the UK in 2016. Alison brings a wealth of training experience from a variety of roles spanning the charitable, private, and National Health Service (NHS) sectors. Before leaving the UK, she provided training consultancy services for a UK medical multinational information provider, helping them to develop an inclusive ‘patient focused service’. Prior to that, from early 2011 until 2014, Alison was employed by the National Institute of Health Research, based at the Universities of Southampton and Oxford, where she was responsible for devising and delivering a range of training to medical students, researchers and members of the public. Her training covered a wide range of topics including: Research Ethics, Patient Inclusivity, and How To Maximise Funding Opportunities. Her specialist area of expertise lay in how to effectively involve patients and members of the public in healthcare decisions. Alison was part of a small team voted the ‘Best Course Content and Delivery 2014’, by the students and staff of the University of Southampton.
Prior to her role at Southampton and Oxford Universities, Alison was Director of a healthcare training company, delivering training and facilitation to a range of NHS and private healthcare organizations throughout the UK. Training themes included ‘Writing In Plain English’, ‘How To Get Published’, ‘Improving Your Patient Consultation’, ‘Being Media Savvy’ and ‘Getting The Best From Your Medicine’. Alison was also responsible for arranging and delivering a broad range of roadshows and public events for NHS organizations. During this period, she was appointed to the Commission on Human Medicines, a government advisory panel reviewing UK and EU medicine licences. This role demanded a high level of commitment to understand complex licensing laws, and in her role as lay advisor, to sometimes provide a challenging ‘patient perspective’. Being part of the Commission strengthened Alison’s appreciation of where training could be maximised for medicine prescribers. She subsequently devised tailored training courses to address clearly identified gaps in the training of medical staff.
Between 1993 and 2008, Alison was Chief Executive Officer of a national patient organization, responsible for its day-to-day management and growth. She fondly recalls her first training session, which was delivered to student nurses at London’s world famous Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. She enjoyed this experience so much that delivering and devising training continued to become an integral part of her role. She later moved on to deliver media training, based on her own experience of television, radio, and print media.
Alison is particularly keen to utilise her extensive experience of working with medical organizations in subjects relating to maximising, and perfecting, patient interactions. She describes herself as “an enthusiastic trainer who believes in delivering the very best, each and every time”. Her experience of training a range of audiences, from members of the public, to top company directors and professors, reflects the strong versatility and adaptability she can apply in delivering relevant training. Joining the Spearhead team was an exciting opportunity for Alison to deliver Spearhead’s own brand of world-class training in the UAE and throughout the Middle East region.
