When CEOs across the African continent were asked this year what stands in the way of their growth plans, the answer was not capital or markets. It was people.

In KPMG’s 2026 Africa CEO Outlook, 59 percent of leaders on the continent named workforce skills gaps as a challenge, rising to 73 percent in West Africa. The same survey found that 86 percent plan to retain and retrain their high-potential employees rather than look elsewhere for talent.
